The Blessed Damozel
The blessed damozel leaned out
From the gold bar of heaven;
Her eyes were deeper than the dept
Of waters stilled at even;
She had three lilies in her hand,
And the stars in her hair were seven.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti 1846
An artists society founded by painter and poet, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), reformation is his game, but don't worry - it's not societal ills or religious icons he's after, but rather aesthetic ones. It's all about being pale and erotic. They derive their inspiration from Fifteenth century painters, a revival and respect for the purity of Renaissance colors. Art is not meant to be utilitarian but rather meant to carry a little more visual weight. It was not an ordinary Victorian world he painted; he popularized a new type of beauty, a certain type of woman with a dreamy stare, lips parted in expectation with a few rounded curves of the body thrown in for good measure.
